Mazda Sucks
I bought a 2008 Mazda 3i sedan in 11/2007 as a replacement for my
totaled 1999 Toyota Corolla. I've hated it and regretted my decision
within a week of purchasing it. (Mostly my mistake, given that I rented
it for a weekend before purchasing, although I don't know how I could
have handled it differently because I never had another car with the
instrument visibility problem, and that includes a number of rental
cars in addition to my previous Sentra and Corolla.)
In 8/2010, I gave up and replaced the Mazda3 with a 2010 Hyundai
Elantra SE.
Despite my anger and annoyance, the Mazda3 actually is a pretty good
car that handles well and has been reliable (which is why I wasn't in a
huge hurry to replace it), I just have a lot of little problems with it
plus one very big problem that makes me feel unsafe. Because I never
got any response from Mazda, I figure I might as well vent my spleen
in public, listing my issues roughly in descending order of irritation:
- Speedometer is unreadable in low light (dawn/dusk/heavy overcast --
it uses orange light through the numbers); this is what makes the Mazda
unsafe for me
- Seat is uncomfortable for long drives
- Low MPG for a small car (I usually got 25-27mpg with a mixture of
freeway and street driving)
- Turning temperature to low automatically turns on A/C and air
recirculation (in the mild temperatures in the SF Bay Area, it's often
just barely cold enough to turn up the heater a bit in the morning and
then turn the heat off)
- Gas tank filler on wrong side of car (passenger side) -- even after
three years, I still kept forgetting
- Fan has four settings -- only "2" is really usable because "1" has
minimal airflow and both "3" and "4" sound like a jet engine taking off
- Small trunk
- Rear seat uncomfortable and difficult to get into (to be fair,
this is true of most small cars)
- Using defrost airflow automatically turns on A/C and prohibits
air recirculation (annoying on cold, dry mornings)
- Unheated side mirrors (granted most cheaper cars don't have that,
but my Elantra has it as a standard feature)
- Radio/temperature display washed out in bright daylight
- Lack of dashboard cubby space
- Dashboard clock is blocked by hand in driving position
- Key remote doesn't open trunk
- Trunk lid difficult to close
- Seventy-five dollars for a spare key
